On 23 June WMO’s executive committee announced that this year’s Prof. Vilho Väisälä award is granted to the authors of the paper on the GRUAN data product for the RS92 (Reference quality upper-air measurements: GRUAN data processing for the Vaisala RS92 radiosonde, Dirksen et al., AMT 2014, http://dx.doi.org/10.5194/amt-7-4463-2014. The paper describes how a reference data product is created from the measurement data of the commercially available RS92 radiosonde. It provides a full description of the correction algorithms that are applied together with a comprehensive analysis of the measurement uncertainties. We are extremely proud of this recognition by WMO of the importance of the work done by GRUAN and its community, and we congratulate the authors, Ruud Dirksen, Michael Sommer, Franz Immler, Dale Hurst, Rigel Kivi and Holger Vömel with this achievement.
